Grown Up Me: primary careers programme
There is increasing evidence that career-related learning in primary schools has many benefits, including broadening horizons, boosting engagement, raising aspirations, challenging stereotypes and improving transition skills in young pupils.
The Grown Up Me programme connects primary schools with local and regional employers and universities across a range of sectors to broaden and build primary pupils’ understanding of, and engagement with, the world of work.
Key events include:
- Inspire sessions: For years 3 to 6, these highly engaging and participative sessions, led by experienced professionals from the sector, introduce pupils to a range of roles in industries including healthcare, leisure, digital and creative industries.
- Spotlight workshops: For years 5 and 6, these practical workshops will connect pupils’ learning in the classroom to employability skills and sectors within the job market, at a specialist site relevant to the sector. The sectors currently included are construction, green industries and film.
- University Open Day (years 5 and 6) at the University of East London (Docklands campus) gives pupils a taster of Higher Education and insight into life as a university student.
- Network meetings and specialist CPD session to develop staff confidence, enable regular sharing of good practice and build links with employers.
