The “What”
This in-person workshop will reveal the findings of research in social neuroscience that has made us more aware of the important role we have to ensure our learners feel connected and engaged in order to learn, develop literacy skills and academic milestones. This session will focus on creating a universal design where engagement is a “fuel” for learning across the neurodiverse learning styles of our students. Consistent with a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, SEE-KS provides freely accessible tools that participants will be able to use for measuring student engagement and enhancing instruction to get the “hook,” present information in different ways, and foster different modes of expression within everyday classroom lessons. The framework can also be used to build capacity through teacher-to-teacher mentorship.
The WHEN:
9:30am – 11:00am: “The Why” – Part 1 - Current developments in social neuroscience - engagement is a powerful “fuel” for learning. This session will include discussions so that participants can discuss how they have gauged student engagement in their classrooms. A freely accessible tool for measuring engagement will be shared.
11:00am – 11:30am: Break
11:30am – 1:00pm: “The What” – Part 2 - Fostering social emotional engagement within a universal design for learning (UDL) framework. This session will include a discussion of instructional strategies that are designed to enhance student investment, independence and initiation. A freely accessible tool for enhancing engagement will be shared using an UDL pedagogy.
1:00pm – 2:00pm: Lunch
2:00pm – 3:30pm: “The How” – Part 3 - Enhancing student engagement using teacher to teacher mentorship; application of appreciative inquiry techniques using video case studies. A freely accessible tool for teacher to teacher mentorship will be shared.
The “Who”:
Emily Rubin, MS, CCC-SLP is the Director of Communication Crossroads, Inc. She is a speech-language pathologist specializing in social emotional learning. She is a co-developer of the Social Emotional Engagement – Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) professional learning approach and the co-author of SCERTS, a criterion referenced assessment tool and framework for social and emotional development. She lectures internationally and provides consultation to educational programs developing programs for social and emotional learning and engagement in the classroom setting.
