Taken from Professor Andrew McDonnell’s book, The Reflective Journey: A Practitioner’s Guide to the Low Arousal Approach, this person-centred, non-confrontational approach to managing behaviour provides a supportive framework for all students who are struggling to regulate themselves, emotionally and behaviourally. It focuses on the deployment of strategies that will de-escalate potential crisis situations and reduce the need to physically intervene, by lowering the level of arousal in both the environment and behaviour of supporting adults.
