Primary Focus: Inspiring Reading for Pleasure in the National Year of Reading
Home >
As part of the National Year of Reading, BDSIP continues to champion approaches that help children develop a lifelong love of books. At last year’s Reading Conference, we were delighted to hear from our keynote speaker Charlotte Hacking.
Charlotte’s thinking is captured in her recent Books for Keeps article, “How to get children reading because they want to, not because they have to”. The article offers practical, classroom-ready ideas particularly relevant for primary settings, including the importance of reading aloud, providing choice, valuing different reading formats, and creating positive reading communities where children see themselves as readers.
As schools across LBBD mark the National Year of Reading, this article is a timely reminder that fostering reading for pleasure is central to raising attainment, supporting wellbeing, and opening doors for every child.
