BDSIP are proud to share the Laurel Trust/ LBBD funded research project, Making Friends with a Book, the research has now been published and is featured in the latest Laurel Trust Research Volume.
This exciting project, developed in partnership with schools across the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, explored two key areas: developing core literacy skills for secondary students and building a culture of reading for pleasure. Through targeted interventions, mentoring, and innovative approaches to reading, the project has supported students in reconnecting with books and growing in confidence as readers.
The research highlights the impact of trained Literacy Mentors and the importance of fostering positive reading identities in adolescents.
We are delighted that this work is being shared nationally and hope it inspires similar initiatives in other settings.
Thank you to all the schools, staff, and students who contributed to this important work.
