Early Literacy Skills Programme: Training for Teaching Assistants

Home > Early Literacy Skills Programme: Training for Teaching Assistants

The Early Literacy Skills Programme is a wave 2 literacy intervention for six-year olds who are not at age related expectations in reading, writing and phonics. It will enable pupils to catch up with their peers and reach age-expected levels within 20 weeks.

Description

Why should I attend?

Teaching Assistants will become highly skilled literacy experts who are able to:

  • deliver high-quality, high-impact intervention to pupils working below age related expectations.
  • deliver high quality support for literacy in the classroom.

It is essential that attendees are passionate about literacy and have experience of working in KS1.

To ensure maximum impact, they will need to be allocated with at least an hour a day to:

  • plan the intervention
  • deliver two 20-minute 1:1 sessions.

The 1:1 teaching structure of the Early Literacy Skills programme is proven to:

  • reduce the need for costly SEND intervention by supporting pupils to secure essential skills in literacy;
  • improve pupil confidence and self-esteem;
  • improve attendance;
  • support parental engagement.

What will the course cover?

The Early Literacy Skills programme will prepare attendees to:

  • carry out detailed diagnostic assessments and observations of literacy learning;
  • take and analyse running records;
  • understand  children’s learning and early literacy acquisition
  • assess and overcome children’s literacy barriers
  • become reflective of teaching decisions and their impact on children’s learning in reading and writing
  • learn how to develop and use a gradient of challenge in text reading to support progress in reading
  • achieve accelerated progress in writing
  • be an expert for the school for diagnostic assessment of literacy
  • work with parents to understand and support their child’s development.

Attendees will also have access to a user friendly data system for monitoring and reporting.
