Improving the subject knowledge and pedagogy of teaching assistants is proven to raise the subsequent attainment of children. These 2 two-hour practical sessions will explore anxieties in mathematics and how to create positive attitudes.

What will the course cover?

  • What maths actually is
  • Anxieties and attitudes to mathematics
  • The importance of patterns and relationships and the connections made through systematic and perceptual variation
  • Practical use of manipulatives (Numicon, Cuisenaire, base 10 & counters etc) and drawing to aid conceptual understanding (Bruner’s enactive, Iconic and symbolic approach
  • How children’s mathematical vocabulary can be improved.
  • Key research and how this practically applies to the classroom (Bruner/Dienes)
  • The importance of patterns in mathematics and how by making connections cognitive overload can be avoided
  • How resources such as Numicon, base 10, Cuisenaire and counters along with drawings aids understanding and the long-term retention for all learners
  • How to develop children’s vocabulary and use of full sentence explanations.
