This course supports staff to understand how behaviour is related to Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), as well as providing practical strategies to support pupils with SEMH and SLCN within the classroom setting. This webinar will be led by Roz Tomes, Clinical Lead for Barking and Dagenham, Words First Ltd Speech and Language Therapy service.

Description

Why should I attend?

Research suggests that 81% of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs have significant unidentified speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). These needs include problems understanding language (making sense of what people say), using language (words, sentences, telling stories and giving explanations), and knowing how to take part in conversations in the right kind of way (social communication). Children and young people with SLCN, including developmental language disorder, can also have problems knowing how to act in a range of settings and problems developing positive relationships.

It is therefore imperative that all members of staff supporting pupils with SEMH should have an awareness of what Speech, Language and Communication Needs are (and how these link to learning and behaviour) and feel confident in both identifying and supporting these pupils to achieve their full learning potentials.

 

What will it cover?

This Webinar aims to investigate:

  • What is the impact of SLCN within the classroom?
  • What is the link between learning, language and behaviour?
  • How to identify and support SLCN at your school.

 

Who is it for?

Any adult working within schools who is involved in the direct care and support of pupils with SEMH. However, it may be particularly useful for:

  • Teachers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • SENCos
  • Inclusion Leads
