Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Why should I attend?
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Introduce yourself to another using Makaton
- Identify non-verbal communication skills
- Describe Makaton, its definition and use
- Understand where Makaton fits into the signing continuum (other signing systems/BSL)
- Identify and produce signs and symbols from the early stages of the Makaton Core Vocabulary – approximately 250 concepts
- Understand how to adapt your Makaton use to suit the receiver.

- Signs and symbols from the Core Vocabulary stages 1–4 and additional stage.

Participants receive two Makaton Beginners Manuals (included in the course costs), which have all the line drawings and symbols taught over the two days, as well as your certificate of attendance from the Makaton Charity.
- Day 1 – participants receive Beginners’ Workshop Manual 1.
- Day 2 – participants receive Beginners’ Workshop Manual 2.
